Gael García Bernal

Mexican actor, director, and producer. He was born in Guadalajara in 1978 and raised in Mexico City. He later studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Throughout his career, he has worked in film, television, and theater, becoming one of Mexico’s most internationally recognized figures.

He has collaborated with directors such as Alejandro González Iñárritu, Alfonso Cuarón, Pedro Almodóvar, and Pablo Larraín, among others, and has starred in films including Amores perros, Y tu mamá también, The Motorcycle Diaries, Cassandro, and Magellan.

On television, he is best known for his role in the series Mozart in the Jungle, for which he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. He also voiced the character Héctor in the animated film Coco.

As a director, he has made Déficit, Chicuarotes, and, most recently, Hombre al agua. In 2005, he co-founded the documentary film festival Ambulante with Diego Luna. In 2018, they also founded the production company La Corriente del Golfo.

In 2026, he was made an Officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, awarded by France’s Ministry of Culture in recognition of his contributions to cinema and culture.

He currently serves as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in recognition of his contributions to education and the arts.
