Alfonso Cuarón

Alfonso Cuarón is an Oscar®-winning director, screenwriter, and producer whose work has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. With Roma, distributed by Netflix, he won the Oscar® for Best Director and Best Cinematography; the movie also won Best International Feature Film. With Gravity, distributed by Warner Bros., he won Best Director and Best Film Editing. He co-wrote this film with his son, Jonás Cuarón.

In October 2024, Apple TV+ premiered Disclaimer, a production by Esperanto Filmoj, Cuarón’s company, created in collaboration with the platform. Cuarón adapted and directed the series, which he also produced alongside Gabriela Rodríguez. The cast is led by Oscar®-winning actors Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline, and it includes nominees Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Lesley Manville, as well as HoYeon, Leila George, and Louis Partridge. Following its world premiere at the 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival, Disclaimer received one nomination for the Directors Guild of America Awards, three for the Golden Globes, two for the Emmys, four for the Critics’ Choice Awards, and two for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

His recent productions include Campeón Gabacho, directed and co-written by Jonás Cuarón. The film premiered at SXSW in 2026, where it received an enthusiastic critical response and won the Narrative Spotlight Audience Award. Cuarón was also the executive producer of The Voice of Hind Rajab, alongside Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Jonathan Glazer, and Pitt’s associates at Plan B, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. The film received Oscar® and Golden Globe nominations, and it won the Grand Jury Prize (Silver Lion) at the Venice Film Festival.

Among Cuarón’s next projects are Ascension, a horror--thriller series for Apple TV+, which he co-wrote and will executive-produce. The story follows Rose, played by Cai-tríona Balfe, a tenacious documentary filmmaker researching a mysterious 20th-century sect known as the Church of Ascension. He will also be the executive producer of Ravenloft, a live-action drama series for Netflix based on the gothic horror setting of Dungeons & Dragons.

His films include Children of Men, Y tu mamá también, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Great Expectations, and A Little Princess. He also wrote and produced An Almost Christmas Story, an original animated short premiered on Disney+ in November 2024, which received four nominations for the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, including Best Animated Special. This short concluded his collection of three holiday shorts, also comprising Le Pupille, an Oscar®-nominated live-action short, and The Shepherd. The nomination for Le Pupille made Cuarón the second artist to be nominated in seven different Oscar® categories. He made his debut as a feature film director in 1991 with Love in the Time of Hysteria.
