As senator for the Communist Party in 1948, he is persecuted by the president in power, when the Party is blacklisted. He sets out to travel across the Andes to escape to Argentina. His adventure leads him to southern Chile, where he spent his childhood and adolescence. This is the time when he wrote his novel Canto General.
