A la par de sus libros de crónica que abordan temas sociales, políticos y criminales como El cártel de Sinaloa (Grijalbo), Slim (Debate), Un vaquero cruza la frontera en silencio (Literatura Mondadori), ha escrito guiones de filmes como La Libertad del Diablo (Everardo González) y Ruido (Natalia Beristain), así como ha dirigido los premiados documentales El alcalde (Bambú) La muñeca tetona (Bengala), El valiente ve la muerte sólo una vez (Detective), 1994 (Netflix) y Vaquero del Mediodía (Detective). También ha escrito y creado series de ficción para Netflix y HBO y ha sido becario de Rockefeller Foundation, Pullitzer Center, Sundance Institute y el Medienboard de Berlín. Sus libros han sido traducidos a una decena de idiomas y sus filmes exhibidos en más de 50 países a través de plataformas de streaming y/o prestigiosos festivales como Toronto International Film Festival, Guanajuato International Film Festival, Watch Docs International Human Rights Film Festival, Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia, Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartagena de Indias y Los Cabos Film Festival. Por su labor tanto periodística como cinematográfica ha recibido el Premio Nacional de Periodismo de México y el Ariel de la Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas, además de otros reconocimientos especiales como el de las Artes Literarias de la UANL y uno del World Justice Project por su labor como Comisionado de la Verdad de Oaxaca en la investigación de tortura, desapariciones y ejecuciones cometidas por autoridades. La mayor parte de sus colaboraciones en proyectos de ficción las realiza a través de Bengala y las de documental por Detective, siendo fundador de ambas productoras que buscan crear a su vez un cine en el que la búsqueda de la verdad se combine con el rigor artístico y la experimentación creativa.
