Zacarías, Giovanna

She studied acting at the Contemporary Theater Forum and screenwriting at the CCC film school in Mexico City. Actress, drama professor, producer, screenwriter and film director, she has won several awards during her career, including the Best Actress award at the 15th Crystal Screen Festival in Mexico City for her work in the short film by Roberto Fiesco, Estatuas (2013), and at the Los Angeles Cinema Festival of Hollywood (LACFH) 2013 for her work in Salvation (2013) by Brett Donowho and Bernie Van De Yacht. She won the 13th National Competition for Short Film Projects launched by the Mexican Film Institute (IMCINE) to make her short fiction film, Ramona (2014), which won the Best Fiction Short Film Award at the 12th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) and the Palmita de Oro for Best Mexican Short Film at the 18th French Film Tour in Mexico.

Past and present weave a flurry of images; fragmented memories of this land. Ancient deities are incarnated, while dreams overlap among intimacy, complicity and the tumult. This is an erratic film that invites us to reimagine the complex relationship we have with the constructed “mexicanidad.”

As a teenager, Ziuta weathered exile with fortitude and determination, saving her mother and other relatives from perishing in their flight. Despite the horrors and scarcity she endured, she upheld a grateful outlook on life.

The result is a film that delights in the search —as well as the many detours along the way.
