Patricia Matus Alonso is a Mexican researcher and audiovisual filmmaker originally from Oaxaca. She holds a Doctoral degree in Feminist Studies from the Metropolitan Autonomous University [UAM, by its acronym in Spanish, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana]. Her academic work focuses on body studies, feminist anthropologies, and the experiences of Zapotec women from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. She is currently undertaking a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Sciences and Humanities [CEIICH, by its acronym in Spanish, Centro de Investigaciones Interdisciplinarias en Ciencias y Humanidades] at the National Autonomous University of Mexico [UNAM, by its acronym in Spanish, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México].
Her audiovisual practice is grounded in ethnographic research and participatory action research processes, with a special interest in the experiences, resistances, and forms of organization of Zapotec women in response to transformations in their territory. Her approach to community cinema was shaped by her training at JEQO, where she integrates audiovisual media as a means to support and raise awareness of community processes.
In 2026, she made her official debut as co-director of Ni racaladxe’ (Lo que yo quiero) [What I Want], together with Alma Yoari Cizana López—a documentary short film made with the support of the Incentive for Audiovisual Creation in Mexico and Central America for Indigenous and Afro-descendant Communities [ECAMC, by its initialism in Spanish, Creación Audiovisual en México y Centroamérica para Comunidades Indígenas y Afrodescendientes].
