Rama, a literature professor and novelist, attends the trial of Laurence Coly, a young woman accused of killing her fifteen-month-old daughter by abandoning her to the rising tide on a beach. As Rama learns more about Coly’s isolation in her family and society while living in France, she becomes increasingly anxious about her own life and pregnancy. The words of the accused and the witnesses will shake Rama’s convictions.
