Paris, 1928. Antoine Balestro, a fashionable young painter, has been unable to work since his wife’s death—much to the despair of his gallerist, Armand. One night, a drunken Antoine attempts to contact his wife through a fortune teller. As it happens, he’s actually speaking with Suzanne, a circus performer who proves to be a highly talented impostor. She and Armand begin a series of fake séances.

In the Courtyard

At forty, a musician decides to give up on his career and is hired as the concierge of a building. Matilda, recently retired, finds a crack in her living room wall. Her anxiety grows until she starts to believe that the building is going to collapse. The two people form a close friendship. The crack becomes a metaphor for life’s failures and how repressed feelings, like solitude and fear of the future, can come to the fore.
