The story of a family of descendants of escaped West African slaves, living on the islands off the southern coast of the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Many in the family plan to move to the U.S. mainland, but disagreements abound over the meaning of this migration. Young and old experience the upheaval and evolution of their family and cultural history, while striving to preserve the forces that have held them together.
