Su obra ha recorrido numerosos festivales alrededor del mundo, donde ha obtenido diversos premios nacionales e internacionales. Su ópera prima Hasta morir (1994) estuvo nominada a cinco premios Ariel en la 37ª entrega de los premios Ariel, México, a Mejor Ópera Prima, Mejor Director, Mejor Argumento Original, Mejor Guión Cinematográfico y Mejor Tema Musical. Produjo y escribió el largometraje de ficción de Rafael Montero, Cilantro y perejil (1996), por el que obtuvo el Ariel de Plata a Mejor Tema Musical, junto con Enrique Quezadas y Carolina Rivera, en la 39ª entrega de los premios Ariel. Su largometraje de ficción Amarte duele (2002) ganó, entre otros premios y reconocimientos, el Premio del Público a Mejor Película en el 20° Festival de Cine Latino de Chicago, Estados Unidos. Obtuvo una nominación al Ariel de Plata a Mejor Guión Adaptado en la 45ª entrega de los premios Ariel por su largometraje de ficción Ciudades oscuras (2003), que obtuvo tres premios en el 17º Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara (FICG): Mejor Banda Sonora, Mejor Edición y Mejor Actor.
