Obtuvo la Beca del Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA), México, en 1997 y en 1999. Recorrió más de 20 festivales alrededor del mundo con su ópera prima Un mundo raro (2001), por la que obtuvo, entre otros premios, una Mención Honorífica del Premio de la Crítica y el Premio OCIC en la 16ª Muestra de Cine Mexicano Independiente, Guadalajara; el Ariel a Mejor Coactuación Masculina en la 44ª entrega de los premios Ariel, México; y el Premio OCIC en el Festival Iberoamericano de Cine de Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Su cortometraje de ficción Para vestir santos (2004) participó en más de 30 festivales nacionales e internacionales, entre ellos, el 2° Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM); el 58° Festival de Cannes en la sección Tous les Cinémas du Monde; el 27° Festival Internacional de Cortometrajes Clermont-Ferrand, Francia; y el 38° Festival Internacional de Cine de Huesca, España. Además, participó en el 29° Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara (FICG) y en el 14° Festival Internacional de Cine en Puerto Vallarta (FICPV), con su largometraje Familia Gang (2013). Es co-autor del libro Cine mexicano entre dos siglos, reflejos de una evolución, editado por la Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid, España, y autor del libro Alfonso Arau: Así es la vida, editado por la Universidad de Guadalajara. De 2004 a 2012 fue el director del Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos (CUEC) de la UNAM. Actualmente se encuentra en postproducción de su más reciente largometraje: Malacopa (2016).
