Dólares de arena is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by French writer Jean-Noël Pancrazi. To adapt it to film, important changes were made – perhaps the most obvious is the gender of the two main characters. In the novel, they are two men, in the film, they are two women, played by Geraldine Chaplin (Special Guest at the 10th FICM) and Yanet Mojica. Chaplin plays an elderly French lady who migrated to the Dominican Republic. Mojica is a young Dominican woman who is searching for a better life. Both engage in a complex emotional, financial, sexual relationship, which serves as the basis of the story. The filmmakers, who are a couple, have worked together on three occasions. With Cochochi (2007), they were selected at FICM in 2007 for the Mexican Feature Film Section. They also directed Jean Gentil (2010) and the documentary Carmita (2013). One constant in their films is a script that is open to changes suggested by the process itself. The premiere of Dólares de arena will be on Sunday, October 19, at 4 pm at the Cinépolis Morelia Centro. Coverage by Gabriel Andrade Espinosa (@gabolonio)
