Cinematographer and director Rodrigo Prieto received the Cuervo Award at the 21st Morelia International Film Festival (FICM).

Created in 2005, the Cuervo Award recognizes figures with extraordinary careers who have made invaluable contributions to national and international cinema.

Present at the award ceremony were Daniela Michel, founder and general director of FICM; Alejandro Ramírez, president of the festival; Cuahutémoc Cárdenas Batel, vice president of the festival; and Ramiro González Luna, ambassador of José Cuervo.

"Thank you to José Cuervo, thank you to the Morelia Festival. It is an honor for me to be here. Thank you Cuauhtémoc, Daniela and Alejandro for inviting me, this is an opportunity for me to reconnect with my country, with Mexican cinema," Rodrigo Prieto said after receiving the award.

The filmmaker voiced his position on the importance of watching movies in a movie theater, since as a photographer he believes that being in a theater made to screen films is a spiritual experience because " we share an event that transforms us with a lot of people," he said. " It feels much more powerful on a big screen, but also with the presence of an audience. To be accompanied by a group of people, I think that's the most magical thing about cinema and I'm grateful that we are still supporting this in Mexico."

Rodrigo Prieto, who is also President of the Mexican Feature Film Jury of the Official Selection, took the time to answer a series of questions from the attendees. During the Q&A, he told the audience about his next project: Pedro Páramo, a Netflix production that he hopes will be ready in a year's time.
