FICM profiles: interview with Deborah Balboa, GOBELINS fellow

Deborah Balboa nació en México en 1993. Desde niña ha creado historias y personajes que la han acompañado a lo largo de su vida. Para ella, dibujar todos los días ha sido tan natural como comer. Su pasión por la animación nació del deseo de que sus creaciones cobraran vida. Se graduó en Animación y Efectos Digitales en 2015 en la Universidad de Monterrey (UdeM) y trabajó dos años como animadora y artista conceptual.

Ella recibió la beca ANIMEXICO 2019 otorgada por Guillermo del Toro y Cinépolis, para estudiar la Maestría en Artes, Animación de Personajes y Realización en GOBELINS, l’ecole de l’image, la mejor escuela de animación del mundo.

El Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM) tuvo la oportunidad de platicar con Deborah Balboa, quien nos compartió cómo nació su gusto por la animación y sus ganas por darle vida a sus creaciones.

FICM: How do you imagine yourself in ten or twenty years, what are your future plans?

DB: Something I've always wanted to do is open or help to open a high-quality animation studio here because Mexicans have incredible talent and we can do things as great as in other countries, so I would like to help drive more the animation in Mexico. Another of my personal goals is to be able to direct an animated film, I want to be a director and it's a dream that I am trying to achieve.

FICM: Do you already have a story that you would like to tell?

DB: Yes, as I mentioned, I love Mexican supernatural things and I would like to link it with the history of our country. One of my favorite films has always been Pan's Labyrinth (2006, dir. Guillermo del Toro) precisely because of that, it combines the history of the Spanish Civil War with fantasy and horror; It's something that excites me very much and it's something that I have always tried to capture in my stories. In particular, I would like to focus more on stories of Mexican women who have left their mark.
