Jeff Bailey, a former private detective who runs a gas station in a quiet California town, is very much in love with his young girlfriend. Unexpectedly, he receives a visit from an old acquaintance who announces that the boss, Whit Sterling, wants to see him. Bailey is then forced to tell his girlfriend about his shady former life as Jeff Markham, a detective hired by Sterling to find his runaway lover.
