Jean Barnery is a French Protestant minister. After falling in love with Pauline, he divorces his wife, to whom he gives his fortune to assuage his guilt over the divorce. He and Pauline get married, but their idyllic life in Switzerland is short-lived. Jean is asked to run the family business in Limoges. He accepts, ignoring Pauline’s wishes. His new responsibilities, along with fighting in the Great War, will have a profound affect on their relationship.
