Twelve-year-old James gets into a fight with another boy on the banks of the canal—and the other boy drowns. James says nothing about his role in the incident, but the memory torments him. He occupies himself with daydreams about his working-class family moving into a better house. Meanwhile, he keeps returning to the canal, where he starts to spend time with vulnerable 14-year-old Margaret Anne.
