In 1909, María Candelaria and Lorenzo Rafael, indigenous natives of Xochimilco, decide to get married even though nothing is in their favor: the people of the town mistreat María Candelaria for being a prostitute´s daughter, and the greedy shopkeeper Damián wants her for himself. When María Candelaria comes down with malaria, Lorenzo Rafael steals some quinine and a dress from Damián´s store, sealing the tragic fate of the two lovers
