In 1909, María Candelaria and Lorenzo Rafael, a couple from Xochimilco, wish to marry. But their love faces obstacles: the townspeople harass María Candelaria for being the daughter of a prostitute, and greedy shopkeeper Don Damián secretly desires the young woman. When María Candelaria falls ill with malaria, Lorenzo Rafael steals quinine and a dress from Don Damián’s store, unleashing a tragedy.
