The 64th Semaine de la Critique of Cannes Film FestivalWill Be Present at the 23rd FICM

As part of the partnership between the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) and La Semaine de la Critique of Cannes Film Festival, which began in 2003, the 23rd FICM will present a selection of films that were screened at La Semaine de la Critique. Ava Cahen, Artistic Director of this parallel section of Cannes Film Festival, will attend the screenings of these films.

The seven films that competed in last year’s Semaine de la Critique will make up the program of the 23rd FICM dedicated to this section of Cannes Film Festival:

Sleepless City
Dir. Guillermo Galoe | Spain, France

Toni, a 15-year-old Roma boy, lives in the largest illegal slum in Europe, on the outskirts of Madrid. Proud to belong to his family of scrap dealers, he follows his grandfather everywhere. But when demolition companies start closing in on their land, the family is divided: while some decide to move to the city, his grandfather refuses to abandon their land. Night after night, Toni must make a choice: leap into an uncertain future, or hang on to the world of his childhood.

Kika

Left-Handed Girl

A single mother and her two daughters return to Taipei after several years of living in the countryside to open a stand at a buzzing night market. Each in their own way, will have to adapt to this new environment to make ends meet and succeed in maintaining the family unity. Three generations of family secrets begin to unravel after the youngest daughter who’s left-handed is told by her traditional grandfather to never use her "devil hand”.

His family, still haunted by the accidental death of a factory worker, reject this supernatural relationship. To prove their love, Nat offers to clean the factory to prove herself a useful ghost, even if that means doing away with some lost souls...

Rietland / Reedland

When reed cutter Johan discovers the lifeless body of a girl on his land, he is overcome by an ambiguous sense of guilt. While taking care of his granddaughter, he sets out on a quest to track down evil. But darkness can thrive in unexpected places.

#FICM2025 will be held from October 10 to 19 with in-person screenings in Morelia, Michoacán, and virtual screenings via nuestrocine.mx. There will be pre-opening screenings on October 9, and the opening screening will take place on October 10.

Created in 1962 by the French Union of Film Critics as a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival, La Semaine de la Critique focuses on discovering new talents, revealing first and second feature films. Such directors as Bernardo Bertolucci, Alejandro González Iñarritu, Ken Loach, François Ozon, Wong Kar Wai, Barbet Schroeder and Guillermo del Toro, or in more recent years César Augusto Acevedo, Julia Ducournau, David R. Mitchell, Santiago Mitre, Jeff Nichols or Rebecca Zlotowski were discovered by La Semaine de la Critique.
