Elena, a free-spirited Polish princess in fin-de-siècle Paris, attempts to save her penniless family by marrying a wealthy older man. After accepting his proposal, Elena finds herself being pursued by two younger suitors, a carefree aristocrat and a politically ambitious French general. Elena’s amorous adventures grow increasingly complicated, and her impending marriage becomes a matter of grave importance to the French government.
