Twenty-one-year-old Morvern Callar lives in a small coastal town in western Scotland, where she works in a supermarket. When she returns home from work to find that her boyfriend has committed suicide, she appropriates his unpublished novel and uses funds from his bank account to fly to Spain with her best friend.
