Based on the short story by Edgar Allan Poe. Honeymooning in Hungary, Joan and Peter Allison share their train compartment with Dr. Vitus Verdegast, a courtly but tragic man who is returning to his hometown after having been a prisoner of war for 15 years. When their hotel-bound bus crashes and Joan is injured, the travelers seek refuge in the home of famed architect Hjalmar Poelzig. There, Verdegast discovers the terrible fate of his wife and daughter, and must play a game of chess to save the Allison?s lives.

Edwin, a cab driver, lives with Annie, a model. Their Sunday plans involve going to the beach with close friend Wolfgang. However, a last minute fight prompts Annie to stay home. Edwin spends the day with his friend, who brings two girlfriends along. After extensively flirting with these two, as well as with a couple of other women on the beach, the two friends decide it is their friendship that matters most.
