Dedicó su obra a la realidad de los habitantes del México rural y a las fronteras entre la naturaleza y la civilización moderna. Estudió Dirección y Cinefotografía en el Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC). Sus documentales Trópico de cáncer (2004), Los herederos (2008), Mitote (2012) y Resurrección (2016) fueron reconocidos en los festivales más prestigiosos del mundo. Sus filmes destacaron por su original lenguaje poético, ecológico y humanista. Recibió cuatro premios Ariel, el premio José Rovirosa UNAM, un premio por parte del fondo Hubert Bals del Festival de Rotterdam y el Premio Joris Ivens del Festival Cinemma du Réel, entre más de 30 premios internacionales. En 2010 fue director invitado del Seminario Robert Flaherty de Colgate University. El diario Le Monde lo calificó en 2011 como "Un mago del cine" y en 2016 fue el primer cineasta en recibir la distinción como Compañero de la Artes del Trinity College de la Universidad de Cambridge, Inglaterra.
