Su obra ha obtenido más de 40 premios nacionales e internacionales y ha participado en dos ediciones del Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM). Obtuvo la Beca del FONCA para la creación de su cortometraje de animación, co-dirigido por su hermano Raúl Cárdenas, Calaverita (2005), seleccionado en el 3er FICM y nominado al Ariel por Mejor Cortometraje de Animación en la 49ª entrega de los premios Ariel, México, entre otros. Participó en el 8° FICM con su cortometraje de animación, también en co-dirección con Raúl Cárdenas, Luna (2010); ganador del 8° Concurso Nacional de Proyectos de Cortometraje del Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía (IMCINE); el Ariel a Mejor Cortometraje de Animación en la 53ª entrega de los premios Ariel; la Diosa de Plata a Mejor Cortometraje de Animación en la 41ª entrega de las Diosas de Plata, México; una Mención Especial del Jurado en el 14° Tour de Cine Francés, México; y el premio a Mejor Cortometraje de Animación en el 14° Festival Internacional de Cine Latino de Los Ángeles (LALIFF por sus siglas en inglés).
