Andrés Ramírez Awarded earlier this year with the Critics' Week Grand Prize, La jauría gazes into juvenile crime in Colombia through the story of a youth gang doing prison time in an experimental site deep in the tropical jungle. “It’s a fascinating, organic, and sensual film, full of emotion, which portrays young boys in search of love and gentleness,” said Ava Cahen. Andrés Ramírez Pulido thanked the festival and Daniela Michel for screening his first feature film. “Art is a bridge between the visible and the invisible worlds; between what we are now as human beings and what we could become. I hope this film will spark a dialogue with yourselves,” said Andrés. Ava Cahen Presents DALVA as a Continuation of the Critics' Week Program Omar Sosa Topete Continuing the special screenings of Cannes Critics' Week, Ava Cahen presented Dalva (2022), the first feature film by Belgian director Emmanuelle Nicot, a selection at the 61st Critics' Week The film tells the story of Dalva, a girl who, despite her young age, likes to dress up, put on makeup and live like an adult. When she is taken away from her house, she goes through a stage of surprise and indignation, but later she meets Jayden and Samia, who accompany her in a new stage of her life: that of a girl her age. “This is a hypersensitive film that speaks to us of learning, but also of unlearning; Control, but also lack of control. It is a unique, luminous film, at the height of its character,” Ava Cahen added about the film. ALMA VIVA (2022), by Cristèle Alves Meira Gustavo R. Gallardo The Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) and the Critics' Week of the Cannes Film Festival maintain an alliance that has allowed, since 2003, to present a selection of films that are part of the recent editions of the Critics' Week, thanks to the additional support of the French Embassy in Mexico and UniFrance. On this occasion, the director of the festival, Daniela Michel, and the artistic director of Critics' Week, Ava Cahen, presented Alma viva (2022), by the Portuguese filmmaker Cristèle Alves Meira, a selection of the 61st Critics' Week. Daniela Michel, Ava Cahen Alma viva focuses on little Salomé who every summer returns to her family's village, nestled in the Portuguese mountains. Soon, her beloved grandmother dies and the adults tear each other apart at her funeral. Salome is then haunted by the spirit of her grandmother, who was thought to be a witch. “I want to reiterate my gratitude for a friendship that has lasted several years between the Morelia International Film Festival and the Cannes Festival Critics' Week. Hopefully, it will last for many more years,” Cahen said. Regarding the film, she said that it’s a debut feature by Cristèle Alves Meira, whose short films “had caught our attention due to their universe, in which realism is mixed with magic”, and that just like in them, in Alma viva, “their characters are really touching and charming.” "It's a drama, but it's also a fable; it's a portrait of learning and an ode to life, which can be sweet or bitter," explains the director of Critics' Week.
