Latin American Film Festival in the Netherlands

According to LAFF’s official website, Latin American cinema is booming worldwide. The organizers believe that our blossoming film culture deserves special attention, and they have created this festival with the purpose of presenting it to the European public. Besides promoting Latin American culture through cinema, LAFF supports other causes, such as fair trade and sustainable development.

As its name indicates, LAFF shows films from the entire region, and on this occasion the festival is spotlighting Colombian cinema. However, Mexico will be represented in the Netherlands by six films: El premio by Paula Markovitch, Best Mexican Feature Film at FICM 2011; El lugar más pequeño by Tatiana Huezo, Best Digital Documentary by a Woman and a Special Mention by the jury at FICM 2011; El lenguaje de los machetes by Kyzza Terrazas, part of the FICM 2011 Official Selection; Asalto al cine by Iria Gómez Concheiro; La Demora by Rodrigo Plá and Miss Bala by Gerardo Naranjo.

The Dutch festival awards three prizes to the winning films: the Latin Angel Jury Award, whose winner receives €5,000, the Latin Angel Youth Award, given by a jury of teenagers (from 16 to 18 years old), and the Audience Award. In the end, no matter who wins, LAFF will have accomplished its objective of exhibiting quality Latin American cinema in a European country. Without a doubt, this is good news.
