Shortfilm competition: All is Possible

Interview with the Director

1. Why did you decide to tell this story?

Todo se vale is my own story and that of thousands of young people who look for their family outside their home, among their friends or social circles. Just like the character in the film, I grew up with this kind of emptiness, feeling that something inside the family wasn't quite right and that I was out of place. Although my character and I are different, in essence we are very similar. It is for that reason I was interested in telling the story of Flor, because it's my story as well.

2. How did you go about organizing your work team?

I work with the same crew in almost all my projects. Mónica Luján, my wife, has collaborated with me in many other projects, but this time a very important element was also integrated, the music. Roberto Magallanes, who I had worked with before but not in such a close and organic way, joined the team. I think that marked a very different way of working. Itzel Valenzuela also helped me a great deal in production.

3. What was the biggest challenge you faced making the film?

The biggest challenge was finding in the theme, mixed martial arts, something which I could really connect with and would have some relevance to me. Since I don't practice any contact sport, the theme is completely foreign to me. Therefore, it was very important to find something with which I could identify, that mattered to me beyond the visual beauty that the atmosphere offered in this type of events.

4. What kind of films would you like to continue making?

I want to do projects that are different from what I'm doing now. I'd like to make films with social participation. Not only passive cinema where the documentary presents a series of problems that cannot be resolved within the documentary. I want my documentaries to be more active and more committed with both the environment and society.

5. What does it mean to you having been selected to participate in the 10th edition of FICM?

I've been involved in FICM on several occasions, but five years have gone by since my last participation. For that reason, I value much more the opportunity to be part of the selection. It's a great pleasure and honor, since my first short was selected to participate in the second edition of FICM. This was very important because as a young filmmaker it helped me re-affirm my vocation ? it was because of the confidence that FICM gave me that I continued producing. And the applause of the people of Morelia and the festival audience are a constant motivation to try and improve in each production.
