All the works screened in this program have been made by filmmakers who have been part of past editions of the FICM, such is the case of Macario (1960) by Roberto Gavaldón. Macario (dir. Roberto Gavaldón, 1960) This edition of the program, which will take place from July 31 to October 8, 2023, has the valuable support of the Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía (IMCINE) through the Fomento al Cine Mexicano (FOCINE) program. The film is about Macario, a poor and hungry peasant who longs for a good Day of the Dead meal. His wife cooks for him a turkey, then he encounters three otherworldly apparitions: the Devil, God, and the Death. Each one asks him to share his turkey, but Macario denies it to everyone except the Death. In return, the Death gives him a bottle of water that cures any disease. Soon, Macario is rich, but this brings him unwanted attention. Macario participated in the 15th Morelia International Film Festival, as part of the special program "From Mexico to Hollywood to the Oscars", in collaboration with the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Roberto Gavaldón 's film was the first Mexican production to be nominated in the category of Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 1961.
