Cine para todxs 2023: 50 OR TWO WHALES MEET ON THE BEACH, by Jorge Cuchí

Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) presents Cine para todxs 2023 (Movies for Everyone 2023), a screening program in community spaces of contemporary and classic Mexican films that have marked the history of national cinema. This edition of the project, which will run from July 31 to October 8, 2023, has the important support of the Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía (IMCINE) through the Fomento al Cine Mexicano (FOCINE) program.

All the selected films have been made by filmmakers who have been part of the programm of past editions of the festival, such as 50 or Two Whales Meet on The Beach, (2020) by Jorge Cuchí.

50 or Two Whales Meet on The Beach (2020) follows Félix and Elisa, two 17-year-olds, who meet while they are doing the Blue Whale Challenge, fall in love and decide to face together the final challenge of the game: suicide.

The film was presented at the 19th Morelia International Film Festival in 2021, where it won the Ojo for Best Film, Best Actor and Best Actress. It was also recognized at international ceremonies, including the 42nd edition of the Cairo International Film Festival with the Naguib Mahfouz Award for Best Screenplay, as well as the Youth Jury Best Film Award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2020. 

About Jorge Cuchí

After a 25 year career as a publicist, with more than a thousand commercials produced for film and television, and a variety of national and international awards for his campaigns, Jorge Cuchí currently focuses on marketing and advertising consulting projects and the development of film productions.

50 or Two Whales Meet on The Beach marks his debut as film director and screenwriter. With this film he won two of the top prizes at the 32nd Cinélatino Rencontres de Toulouse: the Ciné+ en Construction Special Award and the Films in Progress Toulouse Award. Also in July 2020, it was selected to participate in the 35th Venice International Film Critics' Week.

At the 42nd Cairo International Film Festival Cuchí won the Naguib Mahfouz Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Where to watch it?

50 or Two Whales Meet on The Beach is available for rent on the FilminLatino platform. It is also part of the Cine para todxs 2023 program and will be screened on August 30, September 3 and 4 at different venues.

On Wednesday, August 30 at El cine club in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo; on Sunday, September 3 at the Museo Arocena in Torreón, Coahuila; and on Monday, September 4 at the Cine club “En Cartelera” in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato.
