Mexican Cinema at the San Diego Latino Film Festival 2013

Since its origins, the San Diego Latino Film Festival has developed into one of the larger and well respected Latino film festivals in the United States. Mexican cinema has always been part of its lineup, but this year the festival will show more than twice the amount of Mexican productions than last year, and the program includes a special section for Mexican cinema. Among the 43 Mexican titles that will be shown in San Diego this year are 15 films which were part of the FICM.

The Short Narrative section includes six films selected at the 2012 FICM: Defectuosos by Gabriela Martínez and Jon Fernández; Bajo el sol by Arcadi Palerm-Artís; Dentro de uno by Salvador Aguirre; Lucy contra los limites de la voz by Mónica Herrera; La noria by Karla Castañeda; and Quince años by Liliana Torres.

Among the documentaries that will be featured in San Diego are El paciente interno by Alejandro Solar Luna and Cuates de Australia by Everardo González, both part of the tenth FICM’s Official Selection. Canícula by José Álvarez, which competed at the 2011 FICM, will also be shown this year.

Two feature fiction films which were well received at the 2011 FICM will be shown in California: El sueño de Lú by Hari Sama (Special Mention for a Mexican Feature Film) and Fecha de caducidad by Kenya Márquez (Special Mention for a Mexican Feature Film and Audience Award). These are included in San Diego’s Feature Narrative section, along with three films which had their Mexican premiere at the tenth FICM: La Sirga by William Vega; La vida precoz y breve de Sabina Rivas by Luis Mandoki; and Post Tenebras Lux by Carlos Reygadas, which premiered in Morelia at a gala event.

Lastly, the Gay Cinema section of the San Diego Latino Film Festival includes the feature film Marcelo by Omar Ynigo, presented at a special screening at the 2012 FICM.
