Alejandro Pelayo Presented Valentina Pelayo Atilano's DESHILANDO LUZ at the 23rd FICM

On behalf of director Valentina Pelayo Atilano, Mexican producer, film director, screenwriter, and former director of the National Film Archive, Alejandro Pelayo Rangel, presented Deshilando Luz at the 23rd Morelia International Film Festival (FICM).

The film is a cinematic essay that intertwines the director's perspective with that of textile artist Elsa Atilano. Its vignettes reflect the mysteries of the Rosary, a meditation that, like the textile work, is structured around repetition. Through this X-ray of reminiscence, mourning, and absence, among other themes, the filmmaker delves into the archive of the person who was also her mother, as she unravels and praises the traces of her existence.

“For a long time, people would say, ‘Look, this is Valentina, director Pelayo's daughter.’ Now it's the other way around. I am the father of Valentina Pelayo, the filmmaker,” shared Alejandro Pelayo.

About the movie, he said, “This is a very personal work. Unfortunately, I became a widower and she became an orphan three years ago. This film is a tribute to Elsa, my wife and her mother. So, Valentina's vision is very personal and at the same time pays tribute to the artist that Elsa was."

Deshilando luz was part of the Ahora México section of the FICUNAM 15 festival and is currently part of the Special National Screenings of #FICM2025.
