50 o Dos ballenas se encuentran en la playa Takes on the Challenge to Connect Two Young People Looking to Take Their Own Lives

50 o Dos ballenas se encuentran en la playa (2021), written and directed by Jorge Cuchí, was presented at the 19th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) within the Mexican Feature Film Section.

The film tells the story of Felix and Elisa, two 17 year-olds who meet and fall in love playing the Blue Whale Game and decide to face the game's final challenge together: suicide.

Director Jorge Cuchí says that in 2016 he heard about the "Blue Whale Game", a game that consisted of 50 challenges, one per day, where the last challenge was committing suicide.

"It is still not very clear if this happened or not, nobody is very clear on it, but it seemed like there was a game that was urged kids to kill themselves," the director adds.

Actor José Antonio Toledano said that the characters are vulnerable, and everything they receive, they intensify: "So I just think that one part that I really like about the film and that we were very clear about, is that these two people are completely vulnerable and malleable. They are vulnerable to someone telling them 'play this game' and challenging them, and they feel like part of something and say yes. Just as they were vulnerable to finding a connection with a person, out of nowhere, and end up deeply in love and want to reach the last consequences in both sides."

"The game ends up being a kind of a blessing because it gives you 50 days to live intensely, and one of those days, you may even change your mind because it turns out that you found some value in life. And maybe you fell in love and the power of love was stronger than the power of sadness and your depression. We'll have to discover that," says Jorge Cuchí.
