Take advantage of what’s within your reach

At the FICM’s final press conference, around the competition in short film, 100 metros (100 Meters) director Julián de Tavira was in attendance, as was Ianis Guerrero of Bruno, Gabriel Pontones García of Pelea de gallos (Cock Fight), Tavo Ruiz of La Madrina (The Godmother), Sergio Tovar Velarde of Edén (Eden), and David Michán Hernández of Mexican Dream. The filmmakers addressed the challenge of finding the resources, human as well as material, to realize their projects.

Gabriel Pontones said on the subject: “It’s a lot of suffering to make a short; you have to work around others’ schedules, since actors aren’t paid (nor, in my case, are photographers); you have to wait until they have free time, since they may have other roles, onstage, etcetera.”

Sergio Tovar added in conclusion: “You have to know how to ask for favors, and return them. You have to make the project fit your means, use your imagination, negotiate with yourself.”
