Soundtrack  for a Revolution captures civil rights movement

Guttentag, who won an Oscar for his 2003 documentary Twin Towers, said he felt honored to tell this “great history” about the struggle for African Americans to obtain their rights and the powerful protest songs that accompanied this movement. Through interviews with civil rights leaders, splendid footage of the marches, the sit-ins, the picket lines and the arrests, the film captures the fighting spirit of those who fearlessly stood up to power. It also showed how their non-violent movement was met with vicious police brutality, and how they “overcame.”

But more than anything, it was the songs like, “We Shall Overcome” and “Oh Freedom,” that we hear throughout the film that helped keep spirits high and were the soul of the movement.

When asked how he viewed the United States today, the director replied, “I think of my children in San Francisco, and I see that the country, while not perfect, has gone through a big change.”
