The Rooms That Inspired a Genius: Eva Villaseñor Presents the Documentary LA CASA

Director Eva Villaseñor presented the documentary La casa (2025) at the 23rd Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), making this the first time the film has been screened for Mexican audiences.

“The Morelia International Film Festival is a festival that every filmmaker wants to be a part of,” said the director, delighted with the festival’s selection and with an audience that welcomed her with applause. “I hope you enjoy the film as much as I enjoyed making it,” she added before the screening began.

La casa is a documentary in which Rodrigo and Gonzalo García Barcha, sons of Gabriel García Márquez, return to their childhood home to share their memories of the places where their father finished writing One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Eva Villaseñor chatted with the audience after the screening. “Gabriel didn't give many interviews after writing One Hundred Years of Solitude, so having Gonzalo and Rodrigo talk about this intimate subject is something unusual,” she said, acknowledging the brothers' trust in the project.

The director spoke of the transformation the project underwent, as it was originally conceived as a short institutional video. Early on in the shoot, she realized that the story had enormous potential if told in more detail because it could delve deeper into more intimate elements.

In the midst of this transformation, she came across a radio interview where Gabriel García Márquez discussed a dream he had, something that fit perfectly with the interview she had recorded with Rodrigo and Gonzalo.

Villaseñor acknowledged and thanked her protagonists for their courage in returning to a place they had lived in as children, and which was so inspiring to their father. “If you left as a child and return later, your memory will change. It will no longer be the house you remember from your childhood; it will become the house you see as an adult,” she added.

She also thanked Juan Villoro, who came up with the original idea for the project and trusted her to bring it to life.
