THE RED SHOES by Emeric Pressburger and Michael Powell has a Special Screening at 22nd FICM

The Red Shoes (1948), by directors Emeric Pressburger and Michael Powell, had a special screening at the 22nd edition of the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM).

The film, screened at Cinépolis Morelia Centro, was presented by Chlöe Roddick, festival programmer, and renowned film critic Nick James, who called it “the best ballet film ever made.”

“It's based on the fairy tale of the same title by Hans Christian Andersen and shows that tragedy in both the ballet and the film,” James explains.

In this adaptation, a young ballerina is torn between the demands of love and art. Victoria Page, whose magic shoes compel her to dance, is pushed to the limit by the obsessive Russian impresario Lermontov when she is chosen to star in his ballet “The Red Shoes.”

“The ballet company shows us the music of Igor Stravinsky set in the 1920s (...) no other work brings together dance, theater, film, the cruelty and complete dedication to the art of dance,” explains James.
