Cast and director present Rudo y Cursi

[imagen]Gags, double entendres and inside jokes were non stop during the presentation of Rudo y Cursi, directed by Carlos Cuarón, starring Diego Luna and Gabriel García Bernal and produced by Cha Cha Cha. During the presentation, which took place last night, they also showed the film’s trailer, a public service announcement, a “making of” short film and a music video with García Bernal (in the role of Cursi) performing a song.

Alongside the director and actors was Alfonso Cuarón, who with Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro created the Cha Cha Cha production company. Daniela Michel, director of the FICM and Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Batel, vice president of the FICM were also at the press conference.

José Ernesto Espinoza, general director of Universal Pictures in Mexico, presented the film’s publicity campaign, which besides the trailer consisted of a poster that looked as though it had been torn in half, and another novel two-part poster with two different images that appear depending on where one is standing.

Rudo y Cursi tells the story of two brothers, one who loves soccer and the other who wants to be a singer,” said Alfonso Cuarón.

[imagen]The “making of” film included commentaries by Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro. Iñárritu said, “the relationship that Diego and Gael has been like one of brothers, they have spent a lot of time together, have grown together; this is the sense you get in the film, beyond their being really great actors, their brotherhood is obvious.” Del Toro said, “the close relationship that one has with a brother is once in a lifetime.”

Jokingly, Luna said, “there are many stories about brothers: the black sheep who leaves his brother and goes to Washington; the one who takes advantage of the other’s fame to make movies (alluding to the Cuarón brothers). Normally, the older brother takes advantage of the younger and when this happens things get rough. There are other brothers that one chooses in one’s lifetime.”

Carlos Cuarón said that the idea to make this film came about just when he was finishing filming Y tu mamá también, “I told them that I had this story about two characters that represent the psyche of all of us; my intention was to make a buddy movie, nothing more ambitions than that.”

Gael, who in the music video is dressed as a cowboy and doing a very cheesy performance, said that he was inspired by Julio Preciado, to which Carlos Cuarón added “we must realize that Gael is actually a good singer, and he really had to force it to sing as badly as he does in the film.”

Rudo y Cursi is the first film produced by Cha Cha Cha and will open December 19 with 500 copies.
