Mexican cinema's presence in Rotterdam

Mexican filmmaker Sebastián Hofmann will compete for the Hivos Tiger Award, dedicated to emerging talents, with his opera prima Halley, part of FICM’s 2012 Official Selection. Halley was selected to receive the IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund last spring, so this is not the film’s first appearance in Rotterdam. Sebastián Hofmann will also participate in this edition of IFFR with his experimental web series titled Los microburgueses, which will be shown in the section “Signals: Changing Channels”.

Competing with Halley for the Hivos Tiger Award is the Mexican documentary Penumbra by Eduardo Villanueva Jiménez.

Dentro by Emiliano Rocha Minter, part of FICM’s 2012 Official Selection, is selected in the Tiger Awards Competition for Short Films, which is not just for young and upcoming talents; all filmmakers have a chance at winning.

Out of competition, in the “Spectrum Shorts” section, one of the largest short film programs in Europe, the IFFR will show Para armar un helicóptero by Izabel Acevedo, Best Short Fiction Film at FICM 2012.

The “Bright Future” section, which consists of first or second feature films only, includes Mai morire by Enrique Rivero (best known for his opera prima Parque vía, from 2008) and Las lágrimas by Pablo Delgado Sánchez, part of FICM’s 2012 Official Selection.

Finally, the “Spectrum” section of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, a space dedicated to the highlights of contemporary international cinema, includes two critically acclaimed films that where premiered in Mexico in FICM’s tenth edition: No, by Pablo Larraín and Post Tenebras Lux by Carlos Reygadas, Best Director at Cannes 2012.
