On the verge of leaving Tajikistan, Paul recalls his childhood; his mother’s attacks of dementia; the bond with his brother, a devout and violent boy; his father, an inconsolable widower; and his furtive mission to the Soviet Union, where he offered up his own identity to a young Russian man. He remembers the friend who betrayed him; his years as a student in Paris; his vocation for anthropology; and, above all, Esther, the heart of his existence.
