Nine-year-old Hugo lives in Mexico City. Hugo is tormented by the physical and verbal abuse inflicted on him and his mother by his father. Hugo intends to take revenge, and his mother comes to realize what her son may be capable of doing.

With an old taxi cab converted into a raft and posing as a Cuban, Silverio sails to Miami. He decides to do what no one in his family or none of his friends have been able to do: enter the United States and live there “legally.” But between the bad weather and his broken compass, Silverio doesn’t reach his planned destiny. Instead he finds himself in Cuba where he discovers many surprises.
