A young hydrographer leaves his provincial town to present a proposal before the Versailles authorities regarding the drainage of the Dombes swamps. The Marquis de Bellegarde, an old doctor well-versed in the ways of Louis XVI’s court, befriends the young engineer. The solicitor must fully grasp the fearful prospect of looking ridiculous, which could put an end to both his career and his life…
