Most people think of immigration as a finite moment; but as a story it really spans several generations and two nations. The American Tapes reflects two time frames: four Mexican families just beginning their stay in California as undocumented immigrants in the early 1980s and today, portraying their life and times in the United States and Mexico. The collaborative character of the production gives the work its strength, singularity and character.
