In 2008, Eufrosina Cruz Mendoza, from the town of Santa María Quiegolani, Oaxaca, demanded her right to vote and to become a candidate for mayor, which was denied. Eufrosina´s battle revives the history of Mexican women´s century-long struggle for the right to vote. Fifty years after winning the vote, contemporary suffragists continue to defend women´s rights, since there still exists deep resistanceto the equal participation of women in politics in our society and in political parties.
