The Lightning Bolt of the South

Father José María Morelos y Pavón continues to fight for Mexico’s independence. Named Chief of the South by Father Miguel Hidalgo, Morelos takes control of the main squares of Oaxaca and Acapulco. After the signing of the Constitution of Apatzingán, Mexico’s first republican constitution, the insurgents suffer various defeats under Morelos, who is eventually captured by the Spanish army and sentenced to death.
