Father José María Morelos y Pavón is sent to the Church of Saint Augustine in Carácuaro in 1798. There, he clashes with the area’s richest families for helping those in need. Morelos joins the insurgent cause. As he begins to organize the independence movement there, his peasant followers take control of Carácuaro.

The Lightning Bolt of the South

Father José María Morelos y Pavón continues to fight for Mexico’s independence. Named Chief of the South by Father Miguel Hidalgo, Morelos takes control of the main squares of Oaxaca and Acapulco. After the signing of the Constitution of Apatzingán, Mexico’s first republican constitution, the insurgents suffer various defeats under Morelos, who is eventually captured by the Spanish army and sentenced to death.
