Colette arrives from the countryside as a young bride to Willy—an older, renowned literary entrepreneur—and joins a flamboyant and libertine milieu. At Willy’s prompting, she writes loosely autobiographical novels about a character named Claudine. Claudine becomes a pop-culture icon—but Colette does not, since Willy takes credit for her work. To reclaim her literary voice, Colette must embark on new transgressive adventures without him.
