Ha sido tallerista y asesor en los Talleres de Guión del Sundance Institute en el Sundance Ranch, Morelia y la India. Guionista y director cinematográfico, ha realizado diversos guiones en colaboración con su hermano, Alfonso Cuarón, entre ellos, los largometrajes de ficción: Sólo con tu pareja (1991), por el que obtuvieron el premio a Mejor Argumento Original en la 34ª entrega de los premios Ariel, México; Y tu mamá también (2001), ganador del premio a Mejor Guión en el 58º Festival Internacional de Cine de Venecia, Italia. Su obra como director ha recorrido numerosos festivales alrededor del mundo. Su ópera prima Rudo y Cursi (2008), protagonizada por Gael García Bernal y Diego Luna, obtuvo ocho nominaciones en la 51ª entrega de los premios Ariel, México, incluyendo Mejor Ópera Prima, Mejor Actor y Mejor Diseño de Arte. Su cortometraje de ficción The Second Bakery Attack (2010) formó parte de la Selección Oficial del 8º FICM. En el 11º FICM presentó su segundo largometraje de ficción, Besos de azúcar (2013), que participó, además, en el 21º Festival de Cine Latino de San Diego (SDLFF por sus siglas en inglés), entre otros, y que obtuvo ocho nominaciones en la 43ª entrega de las Diosas de Plata, México, incluyendo Mejor Película, Mejor Dirección, Mejor Guión y Mejor Edición.
