Se graduó de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana B.A. en ciencias de la comunicación y en el Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica en dirección de cine. Su tesis, un cortometraje titulado El abuelo Cheno y otras historias (1995), fue nominado al Premio Honorífico de Cine Extranjero por la Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas de Hollywood. Juan Carlos Rulfo es uno de los realizadores cinematográficos más importantes del México contemporáneo. Su trabajo se basa en la exploración de las raíces personales y en el homenaje a la dignidad y a la voluntad del hombre pese a la adversidad.
