Formó parte del Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte del Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA), México. En 2009, participó en la Résidence de Cinéfondation, creado por el Festival de Cannes, Francia. Su obra ha recorrido más de 20 festivales alrededor del mundo. Obtuvo, entre otros premios, el Premio Horizontes en el 56° Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián, España, y el Premio del Jurado Internacional en el 11° Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente (BAFICI), Argentina, por su ópera prima Gasolina (2008). Ganó, por su película Las marimbas del infierno (2010), el premio a Mejor Largometraje Mexicano en el 8° Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM), México; el Premio del Jurado y del Público en el 17° Festival Internacional de Cine de Valdivia (FICV), Chile; el premio a Mejor Película Iberoamericana en el 28° Miami International Film Festival, Estados Unidos; entre otros. Obtuvo también el Premio Coup de Cœur en el 26° Encuentro Cinelatino de Toulouse, Francia, por su película Polvo (2012), así como el Premio Esperance y del Jurado en el 23° Festival Internacional de Cine de Marsella (FIDMarseille), Francia, por su obra Hasta el sol tiene manchas (2012).
